Q and A

I'd like to answer some questions people have asked me this year when I travel around.  I get so many questions about addiction. People ask me when did you notice a change? What moment caused it? Was it therapy, AA, working out or suffering consequences? Also, when is my change going to happen? They also tell me and ask me, I've been doing meditation for many years and I'm only seeing a little change, Why?

Let me start by asking this question? When did we start being adults? Can you pin-point an actual time this happens? No, becoming an adult has so many little responsible moments that all of a sudden you find yourself paying bills, building credit and buying furniture instead of weed. Like this example, your practice does the same. See, addictions and suffering are just symptoms playing out for the world to see. These problems are on the outside, what's actually causing them is on the inside. So, the best way to start fixing things is to begin looking inside, yes, we fix the outside, but we just don’t do that. We work on three aspects of ourselves. The Body, Mind and Spirit. We start with the body because it's the easiest. We start eating less junk, working out, walking or stretching every day. Second, we work our minds. We read, play music, listen to encouraging podcast, learn a new skill or work on an old one we once dropped. The third, we take care of our spirit, emotions or soul. Whatever you want to call this, but we have to look at our emotions and what's making us trigger. When I say this, I don’t mean writing these down and then turning them in like a quiz. Our emotional state has strong power over how we behave. I tell people all the time, if you are fixing one of these three things one at a time you can expect to be fighting addictions and past traumas for this lifetime and the next. I can tell you from personal experience that I already did this one by one and it got me nowhere, I circled the drain for 20 years.

So, to answer the question honestly…. You aren't getting anything out of meditation because you're only taking care of your mind with the meditation. You are missing the other two steps to real freedom. Change always takes place, good or bad, quickly or slowly, but only you can take responsibility for yourself and your changes. The real question I ask everyone who asks me these types of questions is…. How long do you want to suffer?
